This movie tore me up in the first five minutes. In the past on podcasts, I’ve mentioned ‘film language’ or the famine of it in recent films. To understand what I’m talking about just watch the beginning of the movie “UP”. It is a brilliant example of film language where there’s minimum dialogue yet tells a story that hooks you and never lets go.

Each of the main characters have to ‘break out’ from where they have gotten trapped emotionally, and it is through the power of relationships that sets them free. It reminds me of how the institutional Church creates similar ‘emotional traps’ where you may know the truth about something but are emotionally bound to stay within the moribund existence of routines. Imagine being emotionally obligated to go to the same Christmas party week in and week out on the same day and the same location for a year.
